What distinguishes the Smart Tacho GEN2 V2?
Compared with older digital tachographs (GEN1 and GEN2 V1), the GEN2 V2 brings the following features in particular:
- GNSS position data: automatic recording of border crossings.
- Recording of loading and unloading operations (by the driver) including position data.
- Extended communication interfaces for remote reading by enforcement authorities.
- Internal motion sensor making manipulation attempts harder.
Why these features matter
The extensions are aimed above all at making cabotage rules and the posting of drivers easier to verify, and at making manipulation of the device harder. For fleet operators this means more transparency, but also more data.
Only the current device generation is permitted
Vehicles that have fallen under the tachograph obligation since 1 July 2026 (above 2.5 up to 3.5 tonnes in cross-border transport) must be equipped directly with this current device generation — installing older device variants is not permitted.
How installation works in practice and what costs to expect can be found on the page about the retrofit process and costs.
